If you have stairs on the outside of your home, making sure they are safe to use is as important as maintaining the rest of your home. Stairs that have suffered damage are not only ugly, but mighty dangerous for your family and visitors. At Unit Step, we value the safety and well-being of our customers, so we’ve put together a guide so you can assess the condition of your stairs and replace them with our precast concrete stairs if needed.

Wooden Stairs

If your current stairs are wooden, it's easy enough to check for damage. Changes in temperature and humidity cause boards to expand and contract, which can loosen nails and screws. Check for nails that have popped out and boards that are no longer firmly held down. Additionally, you should check for signs of moisture damage or warping caused by the harsh Indiana weather. If your wooden stairs are showing several of these signs of damage, it may be time to replace them with precast concrete stairs.

Poured Concrete Stairs

If your stairs are poured concrete, they may have cracked and settled unevenly over time. This can cause the surface to be uneven and become a tripping hazard for anyone using the stairs. You must also be on the lookout for broken edges or corners of your concrete stairs. Often, small amounts of damage in concrete steps can be repaired by a professional, but sometimes if the poured concrete is older, the surface may be too damaged and will need replaced.

Brick Stairs

Finally, if your current stairs are brick, chances are you are already experiencing problems with them. Brick stairs require a significant amount of maintenance to keep them safe and attractive. Often, bricks become loose and damaged beyond repair, causing instability and may be a foundation problem. If your brick stairs are becoming too high maintenance for you, consider precast concrete instead.

Precast concrete stairs are more durable and higher quality than wood, poured concrete, and brick stairs. If you're ready to trade your dangerous stairs for attractive, safe, durable stairs, contact the stair experts at Unit Step today at (317) 357-4552 or request an estimate online. We are a custom concrete manufacturer for both the industrial/commercial and residential sectors in the Indianapolis area.
